Clicking Noises

hi ladies. can anyone help i've been bf Jorja from day dot but she makes this clicking noise for the first part of the feed and no matter how i position her or how many time i take her off and re-latch her i cant stop it. eventually when the thicker milk comes though she calms down and doesnt make it quite as much. is it normal or am i doing something wrong?

im not exactly sure what you mean by a clicking noise, but my bub seems to make alot of noise when he first latches on as well, then settles once he gets to the thick stuff.

He Kind of makes like a sucking, slurping, gulping kinda noise. Its like hes so hungry and sucking so hard, but the milk isnt coming out quick enough and he gets frustrated. I think he must swallow so much air when he does that, so i always try to pull him off and reattach him, tho like you, it makes no difference.

Anyway, this isnt helping you! Maybe someone has an answer for both of us!

yeah i just thought that perhaps she has still a very small mouth as if she takes the breast in any further then she chokes so its not that she isnt latched on far enough. its all very difficult this breastfeeding lark.

Isobel always clicked when latched on, it was just hear. It sounded like she was kissing it. She still does it on the bottle now that I have switched to FF. Have you been to a breastfeeding clininc?

I think the clicking is air getting inside her mouth along with the milk - if she is latched on properly her mouth should be "sealed" around your breast, letting no air in. I can feed DD absolutely fine on the right breast but get the clicking sounds and a whole host of other little niggles on the left!

The clicking noise happens when she breaks the seal as she sucks...it can be a sign that there's a small problem with your latch, but if it's only happening at the start of the feed it could just be that she's having trouble keeping up with the speed of the flow, but she's fine once it slows down a bit. It can also be a sign of thrush (as the sucking can irritate the mouth and cause them to break the seal) but if neither of you have any signs of it and it doesn't continue throughout the feed I think it's unlikely.

There are some tips here on positioning her to help if it is your let-down she's finding it hard to deal with... http://kellymom.com/bf/supply/fast-letdown.html x

Thankyou sams mum! i really think oversupply or a forceful let down might be our problem as i could relate to almost everything in that article! Im going to try some of the tips in that article and see if that helps to improve our situation.
