How to get a little bit of 'freedom' when breast feeding

Hi ladies,

I have been breast feeding my newborn for 9 days solid now (albiet with the odd bottle of EBM when my poor nipples have needed a rest)

I absolutely love the closeness etc, but need to allow a little freedom so to speak to allow me to spend time with my son who is only a toddler himself.

If I were to express some milk to allow my husband to do some feeds, when is the best time to do this, or is it just easier to give some formula at set times? I truly want to EBF but I need a happy balance, as my son is missing mummy time.

Also my baby needs me for comfort, do you girls automatically stick the boob in when baby gets upset or try other methods to comfort them first (and if so, what works best)

Thanks so much, Xx

Have you tried using a sling? I'm putting together a BF bag full of toys, books and interesting things that me and Kaya can use when I'm feeding the baby.

At that age, yes I always would nurse Brenn first when he became fussy, unless it was an obvious dirty diaper.

I would go with a carrier, that way you can have your LO close, and be hands free for your toddler. I found the Bjorn worked best for me. I could strap Brenn on, and lower the straps enough so his mouth was nipple level.

Why dont you try sitting your son with you and reading to him while you feed? Or maybe out a fav DVD or program on? Personally I wouldnt advise pumping or FF just yet but obviously it's up to you.

There are some ideas here : Second time round tips?

BF is freedom! You can go anywhere you want with your LO without having to take bottles etc. If BF comforts your baby use it! It does get easier...

Once your comfortable... you should be able to do anything... like the others have suggested, get a sling... go to the park, shopping, zoo, playgroups etc... there is no limit. You dont have to sit on the couch the entire time, you may end up with a really bored and annoyed toddler... he he...
