Question about BF and Osteoperosis

My mum has just been diagnosed with osteoperosis. I had kinda thought this for years. Her mum had it and arthritis and died in her 40's from something to do with the both of them.

Anyway........I am just wondering if this will have any implications for me? I have already noticed that my joints are clicking like mad - more than usual and I have had for the past 10 years VERY clicky joints. And the pains in my legs have returned although not as bad as before I was PG. I have also shrunk 2inches :O...........but that could be the weight of my boobies weighing me down.

I used to be into my weight training before I had LO and that seemed to help ith the aches and pains.

Does BFing have any effect on osteoperosis?

I'm sorry about your Mum.

This is what I've found about breastfeeding and Osteoporosis. Funnily enough, I only knew where to look, because another BnB lady posted a link about the benefits of extended breastfeeding for me yesterday, and it mentioned it!

Hope this helps:

"Breastfeeding has been shown to actually protect against osteoporosis (Blaauw, R. et al. Risk factors for development of osteoporosis in a South African population. SAMJ 1994; 84:328-32.)"

"The long-term studies show that breastfeeding is not a risk factor for osteoporosis, regardless of the number of children or length of time each had nursed. Further studies may even indicate that extended breastfeeding is beneficial to women's bones."

"Breastfeeding protects against osteoporosis. During lactation a mother may experience decreases of bone mineral. A nursing mom's bone mineral density may be reduced in the whole body by 1 to 2 percent while she is still nursing. This is gained back, and bone mineral density may actually increase, when the baby is weaned from the breast."

Also, Breastfeeding reduces the risk of rheumatoid arthritis.

I've read that BF helps prevent osteoporosis too, the longer you do it (for more years) the better.

Yeah osteoporosis is effected by hormonal changes and BFing increases the important levels and helps to delay or prevent the onset
