Question

Pink Sick

Hi Guys and Gal's,

On Thursday morning 12:40am Alfie was sick following a feed.

The Sick was PINK like Strawberry milkshake.

We were confused and decided to call NHS Direct for advice. After about 45-50 mins of questions mostly the same ones from both a Health Adviser and then a Nurse. They suggested seeing the GP in the morning unless of course it happened again or he seemed to be distressed.

I asked specifically: "What could cause Pink Sick", to which they said "We're all stumped!!!" and the Nurse Manager was a helath visitor for her day job!.

Anyway we were in the midst of discussing should be go to A&E anyway or not, when Alfie was sick and it was the same strawberry milkshake colour! We got ready and headed to A&E, Jade was not amused at having to be up and so tired.

We were seen very quickly and they weighed him (Without any clothes or a nappy, which is wierd I thought!! ????????), More about that in a different thread I think!
Whilst I was geting him dressed again he went PURPLE from the neck down, yet his oxygen levels in his blood ere 100%, another phenomena!!!

We were seen by a couple of Paediatricians, including a registra, they decided to admit Alfie and monitor him, as the colouring of his skin wasn't normal. They took some blood and urine samples to test. The blood test was so distressing for the poor little man, he screamed his little lungs out!!!

We were on the kiddie ward by about 6am and he had a little feed only 75ml then he went to sleep, he was knackered by this time.

The day went on and nothing really was said, the Consultant paediatrician came by at about 11ish and said there's nothing wrong with him, go home!!! I was a little unhappy about this and asked...... WHY PINK SICK??? and WHY DID HE GO PURPLE???. Without any answers they tried to convince us there was nothing REALLY wrong and we could go, we ended up staying to be monitored as I wasn't happy. He ate again later but nothing like normal, I guess he was so tired he needed sleep more than food. They said IT COULD BE VIRAL!!!

Eventually e were sent home at about 6pm, Alfie having not really been sick or ill since.

It was all very worrying, I am now a Paranoid Android about every little noise or movement he makes.

Anyone had Pink Sick?
The doc's couldn't explain it, if it were blood they would expect it to be streaky rather than well mixed as per Alfie.

Anyone had a purple baby who returns to noral without reason?

Paul

awwwwwwww poor alfie and what a fright yous must have got
ive never heard of pink sick, and have no idea what it could have been, like you said if it was blood their would be no way it would have been well mixed :S

as for going purple and returning normal, Colby done this on her very first feed, the nurse just handed her to me and ran out the room and a midwife came in and blew on her face and gave her a slight shoogle. she said it was some sort of stress thing from being born then trying to suckle on a bottle.

im really sorry i dont have any answers but i hope your little man is ok now and returns to normal feeding soon

take care

Thanks Weestar,

He's never done it before (we wouldn't know 100% as he's always in a body suit) we only noticed as he was in a vest.

The worst thing is the lack of answers!! If this was work and a supplier I would be going mental, but with babies we are getting used to it.

Most of Tam's pregnancy thay said we can't explain it, it just happens to some people!!!!

We will discuss it with the GP at the 8 week check.

How strange, is it not possible that he could have got hold of something and eaten something that could have beed red and it had upset his stomach causing him to be sick. anything within grabing distance like play doh, or crayons etc

As for going purple if he had been stripped naked for a weigh in, because babies skin is so thin, any changes to blood flow are very visible, so if he got cold for a second the blood vessles could have flared up very quickly making him appear purple, before his body was albe to then regulate his temp.

There's no way that he could have grabbed anything, he was with Tam all day, and we have nothing like crayons etc anywhere near him.

Hence our confusion, if he was older and could go find stuff then maybe!!!

As for the purple, it happened 3 or 4 times so not likely to have been purely temp based, and the paeds nurse wouldn't have been worried surely it would be a normal thing to see for her.

The doc's were worried about it when we mentioned it to them! You'd think they could have explained if it was as you suggested.

Also he was touched on the blue parts to check whether it was that he was cold...and each time he was warm.

As for grabbing something and eating it, there is nothing at all that we have near him plus he is only 6 weeks old, actually putting something successfully in his mouth is extremely unlikely, and he is only ever with me or in his pram, which is beside me, so I know this could never be the case.

Hence everyone is so stumped!
