You should see if there's a Sure Start scheme in your area. You can get big discounts on stair gates if there is.

go to Babies R Us (Britains Baby Superstore) - click safety from the list on the left - on the next page has options of products and on right has box saying "save £5 when you buy 2 safety gates - Click on this. The first gate £15.00 is the one i was talking about. If you add 2 to your shopping basket it automatically deducts £5 from your bill.

My health visitor gave me a form where i could buy baby safety equipment and it got delivered to my local baby clinic. We got 2 baby gates like the ones your looking at for £7.50 each. Don't know if yours offers the same.
