I may be totally off the mark here but does anyone else think it can be a bit of a class thing?

It's a strange thijng to associate it with, but I've always thought of breastfeeding as a very middle class thing to do. It makes me think of the NCT and my university friends (predominantly a bit 'posher') who all try and do it. My local and childhood friends (mainly working class) don't.

Before you all lynch me, I know there are exceptions to every rule!

Ironic really, when you think 50 years ago, it was probably mainly poor people who breastfed, as affording formula was a status thing!

see i did used to think that minxy.
but i went to my toddler group thinking "i must say i breast feed dont want them to think i am "chav"
and i was so shocked.
the doctor who is very posh didnt breast feed.
the teacher very posh she didnt.
it worked out i was the only one even though i didnt

i think reading the forums makes me feel like the upperclass do. but in real life its not the case.

[quote="KX"]Here I go::::

What really fucks me off is that in my healtch centre in the weigh in clinic there is a huge poster Breast Vs Bottle, and it list how a breast fed baby is likely to have a higher iq etc, now how do you think that makes the mums of bottle fed babies feel? [quote]

In defence of the breastfeeding campaign, the money spent on those posters pales into insignificance against the millions SMA and Cow and Gate spend trying to lure you in! New mothers are so vulnerable and I do think some of the literature/education is questionable.

The ante-natal classes I went to refused to discuss bottle feeding at all. It was breast or nowt. Consequently, when Stanley switched to formula I had no idea how to sterilise, make or store bottles. It was the one thing I couldn't be prepared for

I'm not sure it's bias or just trying to re-dress the balance. For years it seems now, more mums bottle feed. I think some Healthcare bigwigs sat in a room somewhere and decided on a huge campaign for more women to get their boobies out! Your reaction (and the posters made me feel resentful too as a matter of fact) shows it's not altogether successful.

I bottlefed both my two think its great for anyone who breastfeeds, but it just wasn't for me

I know breast is best but with my diet being really crap i thought and still think baby got far more nutrients from formula than it ever would from me

As for the IQ and illness thing i just don't buy it i think it is another reason for mums to feel guilty

Emily is in the top cset of everything in her class and has never suffered with illnesses as such, just the usual kiddy sniffles
