Infant Toys for Development

I am sitting here thinking of how to entertain my lil one when they arrive and as they go threw their infant months. This is my first child so I'm new to this. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of specific toys or activities to do with your lil one to help with their development.

So far I know to talk to him/her as normal, no baby talk and I am thinking of buying a few baby books to read to them even though they can't yet follow the words. I'm also thinking of a few toys that perhaps make noise or glow when they are activated.

What would you recommend? I'm so anxious, hope I'm not thinking to hard about this.

In all honesty? Our daughter liked anything that WASN'T a toy! She really wasn't interested in the fancy toys we got her! She loved the boxes they came in more than anything! Her first Christmas she was 6 months old- all she wanted to do was play with the wrapping paper and the boxes- she was acutally scared of most the toys!! LOL! But one thing she DID love once she was old enough for it was her Exersaucer! If you don't know what that is just type it into Yahoo and it'll show you!

One thing to keep in mind though- when you buy toys if it makes noises, play with the toy for a good 15 minutes in the store- press the same buttons over and over again. If you're not totally sick of it by then you'll be fine. We got her some toys that we greatly regretted later! You'll be amazed at how they'll stick with ONE sound FOREVER! We had to get rid of a few toys here and there to keep our sanity! LOL! Good luck!

Thanks so much ladies! I bought a play mat ( http://www.toysrus.com/product/index...ductId=2815264 ) a soft toy and a few books. We'll start from there and see how things go. Thanks for the help! I've been on the look out for those taggies but haven't been able to find them locally.
