Help - conjunctivitis?

My 10 day old has woken up this morning with some yellow bits on his eyelashes. We wiped them away, and after he'd fed and fallen asleep we checked on him and his eye was glued shut with yellow gunk! We have bathed it with some boiled water so it's clear now and he is opening it again, but it's a bit red and puffy, and i'm pretty sure it will continue oozing gunk. Do we need to get him in to see an out of hours doctor at the hospital? Is it urgent enough? I have no idea what to do!!

Thanks

Sounds like it is conjunctivitis, don't worry hun! Hollie had this and we cleaned it with cooled boiled water and then took her too the doctors who gave her some drops and it cleared up lovely within a week

If you are breastfeeding, put a couple of drops of breastmilk in the affected eye. Sounds crazy but it really helps, I've done it when my daughter was a newborn. I thought the Health Visitor was kidding when she suggested it though.
Otherwise keep going with the cooled boiled water and if no improvement see a doctor, or even just pop in to a pharmacy and talk to someone there to see what they say.

I wouldn't bother with an out of hours doctor, but take your baby to the doctor during normal hours. It's nothing serious. It isn't painful. Just be very careful not to let your baby touch his eyes. Put gloves or scratch mitts on his hands and change them frequently if that's what you need to do in order to keep his hands clean. Otherwise, he'll spread it to his other eye or to you. The doctor will give you some drops to clear it up, but I agree with the breastmilk if you are breastfeeding, as awkward as it would be to try and drip it into his eyes... lol... By the way, you have to treat both eyes, even if only one is affected.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies! After we called NHS direct this morning we finally got a call from the out of hours doctor at the hospital who told us to come down, so he now has some drops. He wasn't very forthcoming... just gave us the prescription and said nothing else really! Luckily the prescription says 4 times a day on it!

Thanks everyone. Was so worried it looked hideous this morning. Doesn't look so bad now!

Yes sounds like conjunctivitis. Do you breastfeed? Try putting a bit of that in his eye until you can see your doctor who will give you ointment. Thomas has conjunctivitis. It just won't disappear for some reason.

my son had blocked tear ducts since birth and he's now 9 months, one eye is fine, the other still has yellow discarge and he has sticky eyes in the morning.
Conjuctivitis will go away in a few days though
