OMG no matter what I do Lucas just doesnt sleep!

Lucas is bad enough at night most of the time but I used to be able to rely on him having some naps in the day- now he isnt napping in the day either. Managed the grand total of 2 half hour naps so far. Decided i would take him for an hour long walk in the pram for fresh air thinking it would send him off but oh no, he was awake the entire way and he's only just 13 weeks!

He sleeps on and off from 730pm to 6am but around 1am and 4am and after waking at 4am he is awake on and off. Am I putting him to bed too early or something and he just doesnt require naps? I thought all babies needed the '2hr window' that once awake they usually need to have a little nap so they dont become over tired. hes been yawning his head off all afternoon but nothing will get him to sleep!

Have you tried just putting him in his cot and leaving him. At the moment Lucy still has a dummy and we have to put her in her cot without it whilst she tries to self soothe and then when she starts crying we put it in and she goes straight off??

I am trying to do that as we speak. I am not a cruel mum by any means but it is starting to worry me so much how he is fighting sleep more and more. I havent got him into habit of rocking or sleeping on me or anything and he used to go to sleep so easily but at the moment he is crying- I left him for 3 mins and went in to him, put my hand on his chest, popped his dummy in and stroked his head shhhhing him, All went quiet for 5 mins and he's doing it again. He has no wind, not due feed and yawned the whole pram journey. Its awful!

I would try feeding him again. 3 months is around the time there is another growth spurt, it might be that he needs a bit more to settle him off. Fraser woke tonight after taking 6 ounces between 5 and 6pm...at 7pm. I gave him another bottle, he took another 3 ounces, burped and settled back off. I know it can seem they cant possibly be hungry after having a large feed (harder to judge with breastfeeding i suppose) but it could well be that. I am sure you will know if it is, if you offer a bottle/breast and he messes around.

I was just going to say what ramblinhaggis said about growth spurt time. Tired but not sleeping, cranky and hungry is the norm!

Sophies having her 6 week growth spurt at the moment, its so tiring! THe only way she will sleep is in her vibrating bouncy chair. She feeds every 2 hours and takes short naps, only in her chair. There was no sleep last night, she wouldnt settle in her moses basket or even her pram.

Eamon is terrible in the day at the moment. He's doing the same thing-- will only sleep for 1/2hr at a time and awake again. At night he normally goes 5hrs, night feed, then another 2-3hrs and awake for another feed but last night we went backwards and he only slept 3hrs before night feed, then unsettled most of the night Managed to get him to sleep for 1.5 hrs this morning and is now sleeping again but I've heard at 7-8 weeks some babies have a period of just not wanting to sleep when previously they were just fine about it, and then at 9-10 weeks they settle back down again. Could be total b/s but we'll see... I know exactly how you feel!

between 8-12 weeks babies take on a more adult sleep cycle, meaning they stir every 30-45 minutes. If they want anything or anything is bothering them, they will fully waken and either wont go back to sleep (if they cant self settle) or need help to go back to sleep. After 3 months, they tend to settle back down again. Just in my experience. Its an awkward time.

Aw thanks for your replies everyone- it seems true that ramblin higgins- he has def upped his milk intake too- he is now draining 6-7 oz bottles whereas before he could only just manage 5oz max. He's grown so much the past couple days too, outgrew his moses basket literally overnight and is now in 0-3 mth clothes.

He had over 30oz yesterday and last night after a 6oz bottle at 2030pm he stirred at 1. Put dummy in and he went til 3am and had another 6oz. Hopefully it is growth spurt and hell go back to sleeping his 7-8 hr stretch! I didnt know about the adult sleep cycle but certainly explains why he keeps waking from his naps so quickly! I will keep offering him milk to make sure I am not depriving him!
