I told them before I went on maternity leave what I wanted. I am a HOD and I requested to keep my responsibility but work only four days. They did not have to say yes as they could have said that the job could only be full term but in the letter I wrote outlining my request, I explained how and why I thought the job could be done in four days. In the end after some discussion they agreed it

Legally, as I understand it, they have an obligation to carefully consider any request for flexible working and if they decline it they have to provide a good reason why it is not possible to accommodate the request. I think it is quite hard for them to justify why you would not be allowed to go part time although in my case I was kind of expecting them to turn around and say no and was really happy when they agreed it.

In terms of days,I think you have to be flexible in terms of the timetable, and there might be certain times when you are required to be in (for example we have professional training every Thursday so part time staff are all required to be in on Thursdays). As I am a HOD I am lucky because I can timetable myself!

I think the thing to do is to have a clear idea when you go in and don't agree to anything then and there so you have time to think about it.

i would have thought it would be easier for them to accomedate your request if your returning after easter with yr11 being on study leave there would be a bit more flexability in the timetabling.
when i returned my mat cover was only working 3 days a week with the rest (KS4) covered within the dept. I never mentioned returning part time, but i think they timetabled my cover so it could have been possible. As i returned full time they gave me a second subject to make up my timetable to fulltime.
