Are you breastfeeding? If you are, they say there is absolutely no need for extra water as breast milk contains everything your baby needs.

If formula feeding, it will depend. My HV recommended some cooled boiled water as Rebecca was becoming a bit constipated on SMA. That was at 5 weeks though as I combine fed for the first month. We have now changed her to aptimil and she's now fine so we're not giving the extra water.

i was told its best to give some, if he seems a litle bit hungry but its not time for his feed.
remember milks like their food water will keep him hydrated.
as long as its freshly boiled water thats been cooled down its fine!

there should be no need for a newborn to have water, sometimes it is recommended if the lo is having trouble to poo or is dehydrated due to being unwell, but ordinarily they dont need it. tbh i would hold off giving a newborn water as it could make them feel full and then they wont take as much milk as they need

Just what I was going to say!

If they're crying for food then I feed them, regardless of the 'time' or 'routine' you're trying to impose.

Although you shouldn't give them water to feed them or to fill them up etc, a few tea spoons of fairly warm water (boiled) is really good for wind.

my hv advised me to give Mya an once of boiled water, this was only because an hour after feeds she would be screaming for food again when she had just had 6 onces at 3.5 weeks and the HV didnt want me to put her onto hungrey baby milk. I have to say this actually did work, she was thursty not still hungrey and she still had all of her next feeds.

I gave it to my baby at about 4 days old as he was constipated. I sometimes offer it now if I think he's having trouble with his poos, but I wouldn't give it inbeteran feeds ulif LO is hungry I just feed him, he knows when he's hungry. It won't hurt tho asking as it's freshly boiled, cooled water. O and I also feed it to him very slowely as it's very thin unlike feed x

Omar is 4 mnths & I dont give him anything other than formula. I dont think they need extra water before weaning. I tried once & he threw it up as he has reflux, so never tried again.
