car seat ? :S

Noah sleeps through most of the day and i have him laying in his moses basket or on my bed if im in my bedroom and laying flat in his pram if im out but if i sit through in the living room i sit/lay him in his car seat, if i dont go out this can end up being for most of the day unless im feeding/changing him etc. I remember hearing its not good for newborns to sit in car seats for long periods of time, is that right, if so why? Should i change what im doing?

Whilst I would think it's not a good idea for any baby to spend too long in just one position, you will of course be interrupting his periods in the car seat every few hours for a feed.

I spoke to the Hospital Physio about car seats ... Have snipped the rest, as all other responses contradict what this professional told me. No point flogging a dead horse.

They recommend that babies only stay in car seats for about 2 hours at a time. Its because the position isn't good for their spine when its developing. I think it can also cause breathing problems as they are a bit scrunched up.

Obviously being in the seat for longer once in a while isn't going to cause problems however, its probably not a great idea to do it everyday. I tend to move my little one around in the day - little while in his bouncy seat, little while on the play mat etc, carrycot for naps, perhaps this would work for you? You might also find that in a few weeks hes not happy in the seat as my LO hates it unless he's actually in the car and moving - I guess he finds it a bit restrictive.

Hope that helps.

I've heard it isn't good for their breathing.

Also, he won't fit in the car seat forever so you might want to get him used to sleeping somewhere else as he may get too used to it.

It also can cause them to get a very flat head which can cause vision problems. My cousins slept in a car seat and now they all have really flat heads and it changed the look of their faces.

Main reason far as i know is because when developing it can cause a curved spine as thats the position they are in if in the car seat, On odd days if out & about then fine but i wouldn't use it at home unless i had too. I use the car seat on the working top so he can see me when im cooking, But nothing else. I stopped using it on the pram when jax turned 3 mth & now he goes in the main part of the pram.

Its not something id use at home though especially if nearly all day with only short breaks out hun, Could you not move him to diff places? Laying him on the floor would be better if he's not in the way or nothing can harm him , using a bouncer or jumperoo or on the settee if secure & your there x

It truley isnt good for posture, or breathing. In fact we were banned by our docs from using it other than in the car.

And so it is, we never ever use it otherwise. Not even in the pram(its bloody ugly anyway in the pram) We used her carrycot from her pram so she could lay flat.

Why dont you get a bouncy chair or a playgym?- both did their job when Alex was young and I could get on with things

Hi Marleysgirl,

I read this last night before you edited. I found it really interesting especially as a physio would know what they are talking about. It just shows how contradictory all the advice can be - its no wonder us poor mums worry about everything! I've always believed this "2 hour rule" was the case although I only apply it roughly but perhaps there isn't as much in it as they say??
