Not quite the same but I have complained about the horrendous ambulance service I received when giving birth. I wrote an email via the Patient Advisory and Liason Service. They haven't sorted anything yet but are taking it very seriously. I am not sueing anyone, just complaining so the procedures can be improved.

ok, there are a few things you could do, but in any case you would have to complain to the hospital first - contact them and ask for a copy of their formal complaints process and follow that.

Then, think about what you want to get out of making your complaint: is it compensation, disciplinary action, or just recognition/apology you are after?

Compensation: you would normally have to go to court for this, or maybe one of those medical negligence companies

Disciplinary action against the doctor: I'm not sure about this but I think you can complain to the General Medical Council at http://www.gmc-uk.org/concerns/making_a_complaint.asp

Recognition: The Ombudsman might be able to get you a formal apology, get the hospital to change their procedures or give you any further treatment you need. They can't get you compensation or get the doctor struck off though. Try checking out http://www.ombudsman.org.uk/can_the_...y/nhsq1no.html

sorry you had such a difficult time - it's always worth complaining, even just to try and make sure no-one else has to go through what you went through.

Good luck hon xx

we complained about the care my LO received in hospital in the hope that it would ensure the same didn't happen again. we went through the hospitals complaints procedure and wrote a letter. we received a reply back but it was just excuses and nothing to make me think there would be any resultant change.

I'd visit a solicitor and discuss suing.

Suing actually drives up standards. It's a good thing to do.

I live in a different region, & had a traumatic birth & crap after birth care. I left the hospital 2 dys earlier as I couldnt stand it anymore. I filed a complain but all what I got is a person frm admin trying to make excuses for what they did, & suggested to find another hospital for next time. I'm an expat & they dont really bother with our complains.

I have already had a meeting with the midwife in charge at the hospital, and she let me read through my notes. There were some surprises because I hadn't been told about some of the problems I'd had. They didn't really tell the whole story in some areas though.

I'm going back in a couple of weeks to see the consultant, so I think I'll ask for a copy of their complaints procedure then. I'm in two minds about the whole suing thing - on the one hand it was an individual rather than the hospital generally, but on the other they did give her a job.

Thanks everyone for the supportive comments

hi hun

When someone is negligent in the course of their employment, it is the employer that is liable x
