group b strep meningitis.....update.....

hi everyone, not been on this for a while but this has been a real rollercoaster of a week and im not wanting to scare anyone with this story but this is something i didnt expect to happen to us at all and want to pass on warning signs of this shitty disease

my boy is 6 weeks old and 1 day..... at 5 weeks and 2 days we had a normal day like every other,he's a star, exclusivly bf and putting incredible amounts of weight on. all day had been good as gold then at teatime we had to go in the car for a journey of 45 mins each way so were out for couple hours. he slept the whole time as babies do,when we had got there i got in back with him as partner was in his bosses house signing forms, he started moaning but thought ah,he's waking up and will be wanting feed soon,we got home not even an hour later. id put him still in carseat in living room and went back to him 10 mins later and lifted him as wanted to change his bum and disturb him to feed him as it was near his feeding time.... he was really hot and our immediate reaction was guilt thinking we'd overheated him being in car for such a long time,id stripped him but was still as hot few minutes later,he was also moaning but seemed to be an in pain moan,he wouldnt open his eyes and when i passed him to my oh he was wimpering/crying as if in bad pain,i took his temp which was in 38....kept taking it every 5mins then phoned the hospital....we got there and cut a long story short he was transfered to another hospital within the hour (he had to be put on oxygen) by blue light ambulence....got tests done including lumbar puncture and its group b strep meningitis....at moment he is slowly getting better but has been through hell the past few days and dont want to jinx anything by being optimistic but i hope to god is through the worst.....

this happened as ive told in the space of a few hours and as much as we reacted quickly its taken that much of a hold of him that he's been really slow in responding to treatment and as he is on the maximum antibiotics they can give him to treat this we're praying he can fight this through.......my last thing is to scare anyone with this story but it was the last thing we expected it to be and i keep scaring myself thinking of all the what if's.....what if he had took unwell during the night, what if we had waited longer, what if doctor hadnt recognised signs,i scare myself stupid and thats why feel i had to tell my story.....i had an intuition that something was wrong so please anyone if you have doubt go by what you feel inside,,,,, i actually hesitated about phoning hospital as scared incase was wind/bug but we both agreed our intuition was that he wasnt right and would rather go and be sent home embarressed than not.....will try to update this but we are in hospital for at least another 10 days .....thanks for taking the time to read this x

UPDATE......well after a long couple of weeks we are home from hospital, cole is doing great and doctors really happy with how he has recovered, many many thanks to you all who posted on here,he is going to need follow up appointments and hearing test to check there is no damage done but seems well and cant believe how much he has came on from the week before he took unwell to the week he was better with missing a week inbetween iykwim and as much as he was unwell he never stopped eating! he went in weighing 12lb and came out at 14lb3 wee star.....honest its shook our family up and made us realise how lucky we are and have been (not that we didnt before but you know what i mean) missed my dd so much, she had to stay with family members and was a lot for her to understand but she did really well,so happy our family all back together now

Thank you for sharing this. My thoughts are with you, your oh and little one. I'm sure he'll fight his way through this. Its amazing how those motherly insticts kick in, you just know when something isn't right. At least now he is in the best place possible. I have found the childrens wards amazing (we have also been on a bit of a rollercoaster). Although we are now home, the nurses and doctors have told us to phone at any time day or night if we have any worries at all. They said too many people leave things, scared of being embarrassed if its nothing. Let us know how things are going (when you've got a minute). Big hugs to you all, xxx

Oh hun massive hugs to you!! I hope your little boy's recovery is really speedy

Something similar happened to my friend last summer, she had twins who were 6-8 weeks (I can't quite remember how old they were when this happened) and the little girl came down with swine flu and the little boy came down with Group B meningitis. He was absolutely fine after a short spell in hospital and is now a great big bouncing healthy 9 month old!! And the little girl was fine after her flu as well.

Oh my goodness, this is terrible :'( you poor, poor things.
I have just found out that I have GBS present in my c-sec wound and have been terrified my little boy will pick something up from me. The hospital and MW's seemed to brush off my concerns as me being a neurotic mum!! Just goes to show....

I hope your lo is better very soon and am sending lots of love and hugs to you and your family. Well done for listening to your intuition xxxx
