Weaning question but think it should be in this bit

My LO has recently lost interest in her milk and her weight gain is significantly lower. OH and I really want to do BLW and know she is too young to start this. But my mum and sister (the dreaded well meaning advice that makes you doubt something) think some solids might help her gain weight and sleep better.

Can a baby go off milk and is something like baby rice the answer? I have been so determined to wait until 6 months but sleep deprivation abd 'advice' is making me waver.

Advice? thanks x

I was in a similar situation with my LO. He went from being a huge eater to turning his nose up at milk and hardly taking half the amount he used to. I've had EVERYONE go on about how i should start solids, how he's "such a big boy" so needs more than milk etc. It was driving me mad (still is) as i want to feed him as much EBM as i can until he's at least 6 months but i was starting to doubt myself due to all the "well wishers". I perservered and he's now feeding great again, it just seemed to be a phase he was going through. Maybe try to ride it out for a few days before introducing solids or go see your gp for some advice if you're worried about the rejection of food and little weight gain xx

Weaning won't make LO gain weight - milk has more calories than any solid food, and weaning usually makes them take less milk.

Just give her whatever milk she does want. Ruby was always a huge milk drinker and then lost interest at 5 months and her gain has really slowed (weight gain last month was actually zero!) but we had a Dr's appointment about something else, and he said Ruby was probably taking more milk than she actually needed before, so now she is only taking what she needs, she's gaining more slowly.

Thanks - good to know others do something similar. I think I was assuming that weight gain would always be constant as it has been until now. Maybe a good nights sleep for both of us will help tomorrow! Having said all this she just drained 8oz! the pickle

Agree with the above advice! x

If you have posted in here because you are wondering about LO's sleep then just want to add that giving solids does not make babies sleep longer unfortunately that is something which will come with time - oh and a few sleepless nights!! xx

My LO dropped his milk intake as soon as we started weaning, and we only have him on porridge in the morning and a puree and pudding of an evening.

So, although every baby is different, I'd worry that introducing solids would make her drink even less milk!

Also, solids haven't helped Sam to sleep better either! In fact he seems to have been a little worse since!

Oh such fun x

My LO Suddenly dropped his milk intake at 4 months aswell, he had been on the smaller side since birth and had taken the extra milk to catch up. As soon as he was caught up he reduced his intake

Thanks ladies. OH came home and was very good and reminding me why we want to do blw so much. I guess my appetite varies at times and she must be no different. She had a great bedtime bottle, gobbled it all up and out like a light. maybe she just isn't a mornign person!

Is she teething again hun? I had the exact same thing at the same age as your LO with Brady, it was 5 days of him refusing his afternoon bottle and taking a lot less and having broken sleep at night but he didn't actually seem to be in pain. He went from the 75th centile to the 55th, I was about ready to give in and try solids and lo and behold on that 6th day there was a tooth! He went straight back to his usual feeds and sleeping through again.
