thank you everyone - it's really reassuring to hear that most of the time they grow out of it, here's hoping she does xxx you can't help thinking the worse though

Try not to worry. A lot of babies are born with an ASD (A type of small hole in the heart) which causes a murmur, but closes a little while after birth. Often, even if they don't close, it doesn't cause a problem. Going by your picture, your baby has good skin colour, and babies with problems caused by holes in the heart are usually very pale and sleepy. My youngest son was born with two holes in his heart and would never wake up. He never woke for a single fed, ever!

Even in the absolute worst case scenario, which would be surgery to close the hole (assuming the urmur is caused by a hole, they usually are in babies) the outcomes are very, very good. My son had open heart surgery at 6 months old and he sailed through it, only staying in hospital for a week. He is absolutely fine now.

Just remember, in most cases, these things sort themselves out, as you can see by people's replies here.
