Glad that this works for you and as you say all babies are different.

I have a differnt approach really, I just do what River needs at the time. Sometimes she needs to be rocked off but mostly she is fine.

We have done that pretty much since birth, I dont feel that a baby needs anything "strict".

River will sleep on the sofa during the day and i hold her hand until she falls and asleep and at night she goes down awake and we shhh her and stroke her head and leave the room and she falls asleep.

I started with the same kind of technique - patting and stroking rather than rocking/ holding etc. - it worked for the first 5 or 6 weeks and Ryan could actually just fall asleep on his own!

Then the awful reflux struck at around 6 weeks and it all went downhill from there for us, he was in such terrible pain that it took a combo of holding upright, swaddling, rocking, walking, sushing and patting to get him to drop off day or night.

Thankfully his reflux is much better and he only suffers occasional attacks but we are left with a little boy who fights sleep during the day and needs to be fed/ held until virtually asleep at night. Ryan also has the added problem that he gets very twitchy when he tries to sleep and seems to have a not tired/ tired switch that switches in an instant without so much as an eye rub or yawn to give us a sign!

Although it didn't work out for Ryan I'll definately try the same thing with my next baby, glad to hear it worked out for Omar though.

Omar has reflux too. I FF. I just use a pillow, elevate his upper body, & give him his bottle. Most of the time he falls asleep while feeding, So I dont really bother him with winding (asked the GP about it). I try not to move him. If he struggles or wakes up, I hold him immediately, & he gives me a good uirp & back to sleep.

I found feeding before sleep or nap is better for reflux than feeding when the baby wakes up. xx

I've tried everything to get R to take daytime naps at no avail

Both him and his friend are "reflux" babies and his friend sleeps 20 hours a day and R (up until he was 9 weeks) only slept 5! So it just goes to show even babies with the same issues are still competely different. What works for 1 doesnt work for another?

Also i believe that some babies are truly unroutinable (dont know if thats a word but i like it!) and downright stubborn! Some babies just wont fit into routines..It might just be me but routine would have just made issues worse and more stressfull in the early days?

What is the 2 hour rule? Im intrigued?

Xx

There is a thread about it. Babies cant usually stay awake for more than 2 hrs between naps without getting restless. It's a routine.

Once ur baby shows signs of restless, put him in his cot & let him settle himself to sleep. It usually works the best if u feed ur baby just before nap time.

u can go through the thread, it's really interesting.
