But hes 6 months now.. only sleeps for 3-4 hours at a time max.. then wakes up.. sometimes doesnt even necessarily want foor or dummy.. just picking up and rocking, cradling back to sleep. Then last week.. I put his crib in his room cos hes out grown the moses basket and the crib is too big to go next to my side of the bed. And hes still waking just as frequently.. however now I go in.. shushhhh him.. turn on the electronic pushchair rocker thats underneath his crib and he drifts back off.. sometimes not even taking a bottle or a dummy.

But Just read that sleep sense thing and have applied for the free thing. Wouldnt mind spending £30 if it gets him sleeping more than 3-4 hours at a time cos I am exhausted and getting more so now I have to physically get up to tend to Mylo in the next room at stoooopid o'clock!
This is what I am afraid of if I move Thomas to his own room!

On the one hand I think he MIGHT sleep better - I'm sure OH must disturb him coming to bed late and then snoring on and off through the night, I probably disturb him too trying to get OH to stop snoring, LOL. I also think at the moment it is too easy for me to just feed him to sleep.

But on the other hand, if he doesn't sleep better I am going to be SO tired! Also at least now I am right beside him so I can see if there is anything wrong, like if he has got himself into an uncomfortable position or if he has wind. So I'm in two minds still.

Last night he went to bed at 7.30, woke at 11 for a feed, woke at 2.30 for a feed, then woke again at 4.15 - I knew he couldn't possibly be hungry so I left him for a couple of minutes to see if he would settle down, he cried for two minutes, farted a couple of times, and then went back to sleep. Two minutes is a long time at night though! I was right beside him all the time and would have comforted him immediately if he started getting really distressed. The same thing happened at 5 a.m. (I had decided I didn't want to feed him till 5.30 as he can easily go three hours!), he cried for two minutes again and then went back to sleep again till 6.30! However I was lying awake from 5 a.m. onwards wondering when he was going to wake up next! Fed him at 6.30 as he was hungry then and then we both went back to sleep for an hour till 8.

So not really a particularly restful night but at least I found out that he CAN self-settle when he wakes up at night if he's not hungry.

This is the "ahhhaaaaaah!" moment isn't it. When you realise in the dead of night, they aren't going to lie there and cry for hours if you leave them to it. Two minutes is fab (although, yes it's a long time in the dead of night!) We set a five minute limit on her crying when she first goes to bed and a ten minute limit if she wakes in the night (unless the cries are obviously a sign of something other than "I'm awake and I don't want to be") According to sleepsense (and "Parenting for Dummies" which I recently read) most babies will go back to sleep within ten minutes. And great that you can stay in the room with them if you like too.

I was amazed that he went back to sleep actually! It's amazing how your sense of time gets distorted at night though, OH said this morning that he was sure that Thomas was crying for twenty minutes! Mind you, don't know how he'd know as he generally sleeps through it all! He's a very deep sleeper! Hence I tend to do most of the night times!

i've realised too that sometimes i'm too quick to pick him and feed him just cos he's awake. sometimes he will go back to sleep and sometimes he will scream blue murder! it is lovely when you realise they have actually fallen asleep again! last night was much better, only up every 2.5 hours rather than every hour. i feel human again. i also tried a dream feed at 11, which went well.

the other issue is he has started pooing at night (used to only poo after feeding for some reason), so i feel i have to check his nappy which wakes him more as he thinks its a game and giggles uncontrollably, makes it harder to get him back to sleep x

That's interesting that most babies will fall back asleep in ten minutes, that's probably about how long it was before Thomas actually fell back asleep, he was just lying there for a bit sucking his thumb and grumbling from time to time.

This will be the second "Ahhhhhh" moment. So he's NOT sleeping through it after all. He's just lying there with his eyes closed!!

Mine's getting better.. On particularly bad nights when I've been up all night with Jacob, he'll get up at about 6 so I can have an hours sleep (before having to rush to get ready for work )
