reflux worse with gaviscon - anyone?

Hi
My daughter has been on gaviscon since Friday - it worked wonders for the first 2 days - not a drop would come up (even when burping) so I was very happy! since then she has got gradually worse again - last night she went through 3 sets of clothes in an hour and projectile vomited a fountain of milk up into the air! admittedly she is not seeming to be in pain with the sick as before, but its still coming up and more than before.

She is having cow and gate comfort milk for most of her day feeds and then cow and gate regular formula with gaviscon in the evening and night - which was when it was worse. At the moment she seems to be better on the comfort milk than the feeds with the gaviscon!

Comfort milk is low in lactose as well as being thicker - so was wondering if the problem was due to a lactose intolerance or not - anyone had experience of this - what were symptoms? You can't put gaviscon in the comfort milk as it is already thicker and gaviscon pack says not to add to thickened formulas.

thanks!

Nope you can use Gaviscon in Comfort

We have issues with reflux too. It broke my heart. we ended up going t the sick kids hospital and got meds for it.

Your LO's reflux sounds vicious too, I would really go see the doctor or childrens hospital as it can hurt the LO's!

As for milks Conmfort didnt work, she hated it! we just tried SMA Staydown yesterday and its going well so far - havent used Gaviscon for a day now (hurrah!)

that's good to know! I may try sticking to the comfort - she takes it better anyway (she must like the taste of it) and also the comfort combats the constipation side effect of gaviscon!

Is SMA staydown only available on prescription? or can you buy it in chemists etc?

Hiya hun the comfort milk is really for constipation not for reflux so long term may not be the answer.
Jax has severe reflux since birth & he was given gaviscon from the consultant at hospital & yep it made him worse, not in the sense he threw up more but more the fact it was very thick & gooey making him choke as he couldn't get it out his mouth. I stopped using it after 3 days & swapped milk on friday (just gone) to sma staydown & the results are amazing hun, From that 1st bottle the difference was very clear, no more throwing up, no more straining , crying, no more only taking 2oz a time, he was just 100% calmer & and started taking better feeds & he's now sleeping longer at nights ok not all night but much better than he was.
You can buy it in asdas, & " some " chemists my local one had to order it in for me. You can get it on prescription so im told but im not sure how whether you just ask or they have to offer. Im on my way to the doctors now to ask about it. So if i get any decent response ill let you know x
