Swimming - tips, hints, stories please!

Just invested in some swim pants for Andrew, as DH keeps talking about taking him swimming soon ...

I'd be interested to hear any tips, hints, advice & stories that you all have from taking your LOs swimming!

I first took mine at 6 months, she screamed and screamed! haha!
but it tooka bout 10mins to get her slowly in the pool then i couldnt get her out....she loved it!
I wouldnt go in this weather tho, too cold when you get out, i hate the cold!

One tip is to stand holding lo by the pool side for 5 mins to let them see whats going on instead of just taking them straight in, it helped with my lo.

Also we got a wetsuit from ebay it was only £10 new, and she could stay in longer as she kept warmer!

I take Katie to swim babies when we go we she has to wear a baby wetsuit as it can get a little chilly, have his towel ready at the side of the pool if possible and take a travel change mat to put lo on while you get ready, other than that enjoy

I would highly recommend water babies. I've taken Archie from 3 months old and now he can swim through hoops underwater. Its really amazing what they get your LO's to do. Archie loves water and it splashed in his face too!

ruby has been going to a wee class since she was about 7 weeks (i think!) its great, she really likes it, and gets all excited now when we get to the poolside!!
my tips are a warm bottle ready for straight after.. its very tiring for them, ruby is hungry after a swim regardless of whether or not shes due a feed!
a wetsuit is a must, without one, 10 mins is more than enough in the pool! they get cold very quickly, esp in water, so it really helps!
a class is also a good idea, its structured so that they become confident in the water, and its also lively and 'interesting' so it keeps them busy! at our wee class we sing lots of songs, play with toys, and interact with other babies, we both really enjoy it!
Ruby has been 'swimming' underwater more or less from the start, shes great now, she loves it, and i bet your LO will too!!

Don't feed right before you go otherwise they might spit up in the pool, and at the pool I used to work at we would have to shut down the pool for 4 hours. Also Chlorine can be very high in some pools so bring a good soap to wash them off with after. Personally I wouldn't put their head under the water or be very careful if you do because if a baby breaths in water they can get secondary drowning within the next 72hrs or they can get a lung infection from dirty pool water being in their lungs.
