For the mums whos baby had/has heart problems

Liam was born with a Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)

Quote:
Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a heart problem that occurs soon after birth in some babies. In PDA, abnormal blood flow occurs between two of the major arteries connected to the heart.

Before birth, the two major arteries—the aorta and the pulmonary (PULL-mun-ary) artery—are connected by a blood vessel called the ductus arteriosus. This vessel is an essential part of fetal blood circulation.
Liams remained open, and was checked again when he was 9 weeks old, the whole hasnt closed completly and he was to get checked again when he was 3, but recently hes been sleeping from half past 7 at night untill 9am in the morning plus two 1 hour naps through the day.

This morning he slept untill 9:45am is he sleeping too much? i know that sleeping alot is common with people who have heart problems, is your LOs the same? i still havent been able to register him with a gp through here (we moved 13 miles) hes still registered through in my old town. Do you think its related or because hes now in his own room? Thanks in advance girls

Sophie was born with a VSD which is a hole between the 2 ventricles causing increased blood flow to the lungs. Hers was a large hole and she had cardiac repair surgery at 12 weeks old to close it.

from about 6 weeks she was sleeping through the night 9pm-7am as well as about 4-5 hours worth of naps through the day. cardiac babies do tire easily. we were told this was why Sophie was sleeping so much.

Since her surgery she still sleeps through the night but is alot more awake through the day and doesnt fall asleep while feeding.

I think its always best to check with your GP or consultant if you are not sure.

When Soph was born her breathing was really erratic but the HV told us it was normal for babies to have irregular breathing. Now she has had her surgery her breathing is totally different, much more settled. I really wish I had spoken to the consultant and maybe Soph could have gone onto her medication earlier and been bigger and stronger for her op!

Always best to check hon, I would speak to your old GP or get registered and chat to some one just to put your mind at rest.

Good luck

Hiya, I read this thread and just wanted to say please don't worry. Babies are so resiliant, their bodies and organs are so strong.
I had a VSD repair when I was 8 months, I am now in my early thirties, (cough...ok mid thirties) and am fit as a fiddle and have no health problems, I do sleep alot, I like a good 10 hours sleep at night however am very active. I have even trekked to Mount Everest Base Camp with no problems whatsoever.
My little girl was born with a PDA (suspected VSD but was negative) due to extreme prematurity and it closed after 2.5 months. She too sleeps a lot as she still has a heart murmur but otherwise feeds well and is growing well.

I would get your little one checked out just for your own piece of mind as he sounds ok.

My son has a heart defect (truncus arteriosis), my advice would be try and not worry but get to a GP for a bit of TLC and reassurance.

All babies are different and handle their defects in their own way, we were led to believe that sleep is good means they are growing.

Good luck xx

Just noticed that your in Scotland as well, I am presuming that you will be under the care of Yorkhill Childrens Hospital, Alex and i spent 5 weeks there before and after his surgery.

Hi their no he was born in forth park in kirkcaldy and went to the neonatal unit their when he was 2 days old, We were ment to be getting discharged but me being me knew something was wrong his breathing was iregualer(sp) and was jump iykwim so got the docters to check him and his oxygen levels were at 88, So while he was their he had a chest xray 1st then the friday after he was born they decided to do an echo and found he had a PDA, He was attached to oxygen and all other machines as he was fighting an infection at the same time and having antibiotics. So after they couldnt here the murmur we were finally dischared and went for a check up a few months later. The hole is still their and hes to be checked again when he is 3 years old.

We recently just moved and he is now in his own room and started walking 4 weeks ago. His rountine mucked up a bit now but this is what its like just now.

9am-9:45am, wakes up has a 5oz bottle then gets his breakfast half an hour later
Plays for a while gets dressed and what not
10:30-11:30 Has an hour nap in his cot
12:30-1:30 Has lunch, plays either go for a walk or shopping depends on what time he has woken

2:30-3:30 has another hour nap

because he sleeps so much he doesnt wake untill around 4-4-30 meaning he doesnt get his dinner untill 5-5:30pm has a bath at half past 6 then sits me me and the couch read him a book then get him a bottle between 7:15 and 7:30pm and he goes to bed.

Now i think hes sleeping way too much for an active 11 month old hes 1 on sunday. He has never been a sleepy baby untill we have moved in dont know if its all the peice hes getting here from living with me and OH at my parents with my 2 siblings.

16 hours sleep in 24 hours seems alot to me? what do use think? Going to the docters with him tomorrow so will update when im back on the wednesday x
