"She's not that strange lookin"

I took Abby into work to meet folks yesterday and we were standing chatting to a couple of my colleages and one mused "She's not that strange lookin, is she"

I laughed and said "no, of course she isn't"

The lass (who is from Northern Ireland) Back tracked and said "no, no, no, it means she seems happy to be around people she doesn't know" (Or something)

Is there someone out there who can elaborate on this? Is it really a saying? Or do I need to go back and slap her?

I've never heard of a phrase like that? though I have heard on here the phrase making strange meaning to act up around strangers? (I think?)

I'm surprised you didn't slap her than and there I probably would have

Ive heard "making strange" before, like they aren't being shy around strangers. But isn't that strange looking sounds off. Maybe it was just a slip of the tongue or something? Or maybe they thought she would look different some how because she was born early??

I always get "he looks so normal" when I tell people he was born so early...or "he is so aware!"

I have heard the same expression as the others but not in the way she said it. She probably meant the same thing but it came out wrong. She looks great.

Yep, I've heard it before. I remember being younger and my sister being affronted when my mum told someone "your baby's strange!" It means they don't like being handled by people they don't know well.

It does sound like she meant Abby was good with strangers rather than she looks weird.

The lass is actually really lovely so it would surprise me if it were meant any other way. I had never heard it though. Are there many other sayings which can be so offensive if taken the wrong way?

Not the same and not offensive but I used to work with a man from Aberdeen who would ask "so what are you saying?" and everyone used to look very confused and say "I didn't say anything."

It turned out to mean something along the lines of "what's new?" or "what do you know?"

I think I would have been offended by someone saying Joseph was strange or wasn't strange looking, even though not being strange looking is a good thing. It's not something I have heard before.
