Crying at bedtime

My LO is 13 weeks old and is terrible at napping during the day at the moment, will sleep for 45 minutes max and then wants more sleep after only being up for about an hour and a half! Can take ages to get him to sleep too, have started taking him in bedroom when he seems tired and this sometimes works.....have also been trying to get him to nap in his moses basket during the day too....he's fine being in their awake, no problem sleeping in there at night but hates it during the day!

Think I ruined it a bit today as he got upset when I tried to put him in there as he then didn't sleep the rest of the afternoon! Have ordered a baby hammock to see if he'll nap in that instead.....

Anyway, come bedtime, he'll be tired after a wind down time in front room, reading stories etc, go get ready for bed, changed into pjs after a massage, continue stories, he'll yawn get sleepy, then when I take him into bedroom to feed and sleep he SCREAMS!!!! full on tantrum style screaming! Lasted 10minutes tonight, then he goes extra sleepy, feeds for about 25 minutes then he'll sleep for 4-6 hours! Have no set bedtime, but normally between 6 and 7, depends on naps (if he's had any and what time they were).

For example, today he slept while in pram for 30minutes - was out for over an hour but took him half hour to fall asleep despite yawning before we left! - from 4-430 then started getting ready for bed at 5.50, in bedroom 6.10, cried for 10 minutes, then asleep and in bed by 6.50. his last 'full' nap had been at 830 this morning (45minutes), then a couple 10-20 minute sleep which aren't enough I know!

Have changed the routine so we continue stories after getting ready for bed and only second night of doing this as I wanted to break the cycle/habit of this crying but any ideas/support anyone can offer would be great! So upsetting for him and me.

Some babies do cry before going to sleep. My mum said I always did. She wasn't doing controlled crying or anything, I just always cried before going off. I've heard others on here saying their babies do too.
For a 13 week old, needing a nap after an hour and a half of being awake is very normal. That was definitely Ruby at 13 weeks.
For calming him down before naps, have you tried some gentle music / singing? This works with Ruby.

He could be getting overtired and he's taking too long to fall asleep when he first gets tired.

Have you tried putting him down at the first sign of tiredness?

Although reading stories sounds like a good way to wind down in theory, when I tried this with Violet, it only made it worse. My voice and my presence was only distracting her more and actually keeping her awake. If I just left her, she'd go off within 10mins no problem. If I tried reading, she'd be moaning and wriggling throughout.

Leaving him alone doesn't work - he lies there for a while before crying and I don't like the idea of CIO.....

Humming does seem to help him, but not all the time! Was thinking about getting a CD to keep playing while he sleeps to see if that helps but not sure which one/s would be any good.

Good to know its normal how long he can stay awake for, thought maybe it should be longer but due to his short naps he couldn't do it, so maybe his short naps are enough for him at the moment?

Tried getting him to sleep when he first shows tired signs (quientening down, not playing, yawning, rubbing face etc) but again, its very hit and miss!
Thanks for your help ladies.
