Need advice please - GP told me my son is too heavy

Ok so I was at my GP clinic this morning for a 9 month checkup for Euan and for his H1N1 shot.

He was weighed at 24.65lb. He did the weight percentile and he said he was off the chart for his age.
He asked me what i was feeding Euan and I told him.
This is our schedule:

8.00 7oz milk
9.30 cereal portion
12.00 sandwich or piece of toast and a yoghurt
14.30 7oz milk
17.30 7oz milk or dinner portion
19.30 7oz milk

He told me that he is getting too much milk for his age. He told me i should cut it down to 2 bottles per day and 3 maximum and at 9 months he should be getting most of his calories from food.

So what do you think of this? I was under the impression that babies for the first year were supposed to mainly have milk as there main food source with solids chucked in there too. DO you think I should drop some milk? I happy to drop one but i dont think i should drop 2 of them. Its the favourite part of his diet.

My GP did not do his height so I am going to do that this afternoon when he wakes up from his nap. Since birth he has been on the 97-99th percentile for both height and weight. So I am guessing his height will still be up there too.

Does anyone have any of the percentile charts or know a good website with percentiles i can check out.

I feel a bit bad for him and thing is he is not a fat baby he is truly solid and very muscular. I dont think i have been feeding him too much and i think he is still following his curve but he said he was off the chart today so guessing thats not good. I am just not sure what to do.

Any advice greatly appreciated. This is a recent pic of him from a few weeks ago.

There is a calculator thinghy there.

One thing to note though, is that there are actually different centile charts for breastfed and formula fed babies. I know the ones we get here are for formula fed babies and they have just released the BF ones.

I think, for the most part, you know your baby best. Go with your own gut instinct or if you are unsure, try for a second opinion. It doesn't sound like he is terribly overfed and it's not as if you are stuffing him full of rubbish!

I just used this chart to figure it up and it says he's at the 93%

If he is content and he's always been a bigger baby I honestly wouldn't be concerned. Do you feed based on when he wants it or is a schedule that he eats on even if he isn't acting hungry? Babies from about his age on will really start to thin out as they crawl more and start walking

hey hun, firstly just wanted to say that your son is gorgeous!!
alys my LO is also a little chubby baba, she was weighed about 3 weeks ago and was 21.4lbs at 8 months so she will probably be quite a bit heavier now, she has atleast 4, 7oz bottles of milk a day and about 2 meals including some toast in the morning, i think as long as they are happy and content then screw the GP, it will fall off them when they start getting around more, alys' nine month check was meant to be last week but there was no HV so it was cancelled, ready for next week.
my LO is on the 97th percentile for wieght and im not sure about height,
your little boy looks around the same size as my aly

theres nothing wrong with him hun, your doing fine!!

xxx

Thanks girls for your kind advice... I think he is doing ok, he is a very healthy little boy. I do get lots of comments about him being too big for his age.

I suppose i do feed more on a schedule, but once i feed him he wants it and if you stop for a second or too he lets you know thats not good enough. He is a really placid little boy and doesnt really let you know when he is hungry or wet etc. I know once he is more mobile he will lose it. Bless him. I think I am going to ignore the GP.. I think he would be upset if i dropped 2 bottles i will try to drop one and see what happens.

Thanks again for your replies and for the info on percentiles.

Instead of dropping them altogether, how about making two of them smaller? That way he is still in the same routine.

I would try seeing if those bottles he will let you know when he's hungry. I think setting the time for solids is good because as he gets older he will have a time for breakfast, lunch, dinner...good routine. But for the milk I'd probably offer when he wakes and before bed like normal but the others I'd let him decide if he wants it, just see if he starts to show signs he's hungry. He may just eat it because it's offered

To be honest there's not much point in checking his weight and saying he's overweight and not checking his height to see if that is in the same centile. My LO weighed the same as yours at that age so I really wouldn't worry about it as long as he's not 10th centile for height and 90th centile for weight - he sounds like he's in proportion to me
