7 days without a poo *UPDATE - 11 days now*

Abby is primarily breastfed but we have introduced baby rice for a few weeks and this week started on purees and stuff. Week before last she went 7 days without a poo. This week she has done the same - we are still waiting for it.

Is this normal? I know breastfed babies can go a good long while without it and have enjoyed the clean nappies, but I had thought that since weaning to rice she would poo more often. And certainly with the fruit and veg purees.

She isn't in any pain or bothered by it in the slightest. She doesn't strain then nothing - but she does fart alot.

Should I be concerned?

That's normal for breastfed babies, from what I've read. One of my books, can't remember which, says that it has been known for a BF baby to go 3 weeks without a no2, and perfectly healthy.

Poppy did this when she started early solids. We went ten days without a poo!!! HV said she was just using up all the nutrients and as was breast fed it was fine. It sorted itself within a few weeks and now we're back to daily poo's again. I would say enjoy the break from dirty nappies while it lasts!

Maybe contact your HV. Is her tummy distended? Is she uncomfy when you palpate around her abdomen. Euan went 8 days without a poo and my DR told me that was ok but if it was more than that he would want to examine him and basically just feel his tummy. If she isnt in any distress then i am sure she is fine. Is she still eating and drinking ok?

Is she still wetting her diapers the same?

If you have a jumparoo exercise can help...if not try doing "bicycle" legs with her laying flat. Im sure you know what I mean.

Cut back on bananas and apples if you feed those...try prunes hehe.

Also infant massage can work. Try this...lay her on her back, starting from the bottom of her rib cage write an "I" on her tummy to just above where her diaper hits. Then in the same place write "L", then an upside down "U" and then an upside down "V" and then another upside down "U". Sounds nuts...but it may work. It did for Lakai.

Massage her bum too...towards her feet.

Good luck!

Infant massage definitely works, Emily only goes once a week and it is after a massage session. It is an horrendous explosion but a good clear out...sorry TMI.
She's not on solids yet so will see when I do start weaning her whether she goes longer without a poo...
Hope you get a result soon...it is amazing how much they can store in their bowels for such a long time without complaint...

I think I read that if they are farting loads they are not constipated. Not sure though. I agree with baby massage, my mum did it to Freya yesterday and she pooed on the towel .
