Amby hammock - why we're not sure about it - any suggestions?

I posted on here last week saying I wasn't convinced that our little one was happy sleeping in his Amby hammock. I couldn't ever say quite why I thought this, but even so I knew something didn't feel quite right to me. So... this morning I went to Monty because he was grumbling away in his hammock, and I found him all squashed up against the side of the hammock, unable to move back into the centre ... not surprised he was grizzling, as I would have been too in that position!

I'm just wondering, before we rush off and replace the hammock with a more standard moses basket or cot, whether you think we are doing something wrong. Monty is a very "busy" baby, and he kicks his legs and arms loads, often in his sleep. Because of this, he manages to move about, even though he's not intentionally doing so. This is I guess how he managed to end up squashed against the side of the hammock. Do you think there's something different we should be doing with the hammock to stop this happening, or do we just have to accept that some babies aren't suited to hammocks? I'm not too worried about replacing the hammock, as they sell well on eBay. Far more important is that our gorgeous boy gets his sleep and is happy and comfortable wherever we lay him down.

Thanks for your help xx

We have an Amby that we used just as a travel cot, but it was never the amazing sleep solution that it is advertised as. The last time we used it Isla was still swaddled, so not able to wriggle about that much, but I know amby sell a baby postioner for babies to help keep them central (http://www.amby.co.uk/site/product.p...0,82&pfid=0,14) Maybe you could make the same thing with a couple of towels? hth.

We used the "snuggler" (which came with our Amby) for the first couple of weeks, after that, Romilly didn't need it. She does tend to wriggle and kick quite a lot as she settles herself, but she's never managed to move away from being in the centre of the nest.

Can I ask how you have the nest adjusted? We only recently figured out how to use the velcro to raise the back up more, and Romilly really seems to prefer it like that. She can still kick and wriggle about, just seems more snug for her. Also seems to help her wind, being more upright.

As you say, at the end of the day, what suits one baby might not suit another, and not every baby will like the Amby. We're fortunate, as Romilly loves hers. I would try a snuggler if you haven't already, and maybe see about adjusting it differently, before giving up on it though

I used a bassinet with my LO, and she had a similar problem - she would snuggle up to the side and smush her face into it, then get upset So you might have the same problem with a moses basket. I used rolled up receiving blankets - maybe you could try that??

Good luck!

Eala, thanks for this info. We will go up in a minute and see what you mean about adjusting the velcro. And it's great to hear being upright helps Romilly's wind - I am hoping it will also help Monty's wind. Out of interest, when is Romilly's wind worse? Is it the classic colic time between about 6pm and 10pm, or is it just as and when? Have you found any other tips for helping her wind? Oh, one more Q: is her wind top or bottom? Monty's is very much bottom wind, so we're not convinced the Infacol is having much effect, as I think that works more on the upper digestive system. Plus I hate keep giving the stuff to him.

Anyway, thanks for the tip on the hammock. xx

Re Romilly's wind, she's pretty much windy all the time after feeds. In the early days, it was worse in the late evening, but that seems to have settled down. We're using a homeopathic product just now called Windy Pops, which so far, seems to be helping! She's bringing up her wind better after feeds (it could take 45 mins to get her to burp before!), and it also seems to help um... release her bottom wind . It was recommended by my HV, apparently all the mums in her previous area swore by it. I couldn't find it in any shops nearby, but I got it online.

I replied to your PM about the velcro bit, just thought I'd post some pics here in case anyone else has issues adjusting the nest.

The velcro to adjust the nest is on the bottom edge of the fabric that runs alongside the bottom of the metal hanger. Bear with me, this is hard to describe, so I've got some pics:

This pics shows where the velcro is - it's undone in this picture:

You loosen the ties on either side, pull the fabric through to raise the back of the nest, fasten the velcro together, and re-tie the ties. You should get something that looks like this:

This pic shows how the aspect of the rear of the nest changes. Obviously it settles back a bit when baby is put in

Hope that helps

Hi , I did reply to your original post the other day saying I was giving it till Xmas, well I gave up & Florence is much happier in her Moses basket which really is too small therefore I have gone out & bought a cot.
I agree, it certainly isn't the miracle sleep solution either... Thought I had the only baby to not like it.!
