help coping with reflux - doctor prescribed nothing

Took Riya to doctors yesterday as she's been spitting up milk and very fussy when taking milk. Doctor did tests, ultrasound etc and says she has reflux.

However he refused to prescribe anything to relieve it, due to the lack of studies done on the recommended medication and basically told us to come back in 2 weeks if it was getting worse.

My question therefore is , are there any simple things we could do to relieve LO's pain when feeding, is feed her in semi upright position etc

Would really welcome any advice / suggestions.

we tried EVERYTHING..... literally... bought every chair wedge bed everything nothing worked. finally we started adding rice cereal to his bottle.. and that works but the doc perscribed prevacid solutabs which is the only med that has worked from all we've tried!!! he still spits up but is now a happy spitter!!!! ps- we do keep him elevated in a swing for atleast 30 min after a feed and make sure to burp her often. we also feed him smaller portions more frequently .. every 2 hours..

My LO takes Losec, and there are plenty of studies done on this drug to show it is safe, so I'm suprised the dr wouldn't give you anything. What sort of qantities of milk does you LO lose? ie. puddles on the floor or just runs out of the mouth? How's the weight gain going? When our LO's reflux gets really bad I express and put thickener in, which does help, as does keeping him upright after feeds, having the cot on an incline, burping VERY carefully etc. Re the discomfort while feeding, feeding semi-upright is a big help, and I also find waiting until you're sure they are properly hungry so they are more likely to push on through the initial discomfort (i.e. if they aren't that hungry whe you feed, when they feel the acid they will want to stop straight away). We often give our LO breaks during the feed as well. Be prepared for it to get to its worst at about three months, then it will improve. The first two doctors I took our bub to gave me the 'come back in two weeks' line as well, but the third took us seriously and did the ultrasound etc. Some doctors seem to think mummies just over-react to normal baby spit-up, which as we know - reflux is not! Good luck

I find that waiting a bit longer between feeds does help my LO so she will take more in her bottle, otherwise she'll only have 1oz then cry in pain and there's no way of getting anymore milk into her. I also find initially holding her in a cradle in one arm whilst i'm standing up, distracting her by walking around and showing her lights etc takes her mind off the pain and then I slip the bottle in and she starts feeding usually, then I can gradually sit down! It is really hard, and gaviscon hasn't made any difference to my LO, so not even using it now. I also have to put her to sleep on her front as she screams in pain on her back. It has definately got a little worse as time has gone on rather than better however

I'm sure you can buy infant Gaviscon from the pharmacy without a prescription so you could try that in the meantime maybe?

Chaise has suffered from really bad reflux from a very young age. We've tried everything, feedig upright, raising his cot, SMA Staydown formula, ranitidie and gaviscon (both perscribed from the hospital)

More recently we tried Aloe vera. On the bottle it says not to give to infants but I couldn't see why, so my old boss when I worked in a health shop phoned the manufacturers and they said it was fine in a smaller dose, so Chaise has 2.5mg twice a day and we've never looked back! Before, he struggled to drink a 6oz bottle and now he quite easily downs 8oz!
What it does is heal erosions in the oesophagus (sp?) caused by the reflux and puts a protective coating on the stomach.
I would reccomend doing your own research before trying it though, but it's done wonders for Chaise
