sleeping while swaddled

hi,

i swaddle my son when i put him down to sleep, but i've been told by a midwife and in the nhs booklet that you shouldn't, as if the baby overheats, they can't get the swaddle off to cool down. what are your opinions and do you swaddle to sleep?

i thought this is what swaddling is for!!! lol

We tend to just put our LO in a vest when we settle her for the night as her swaddle blanket is pretty thick

That's ridiculous! We just used to put a sleep suit and then the swaddle blanket on LO and put him to bed just like that, just make sure the bedroom isn't too hot. Sorry but that the stupidest thing I've ever heard - bloody midwifes!

i do this with my wee one as it helps him sleep better my house is quite cold and i check him whenever i wake up through the night to make sure he isn't too warm, my mum did this with all of us and i did it with my daughter and now with my son without it i notice he wakes up a good couple of hours earlier by scratching his face etc x

I agree, very silly!! They actually encourage swaddling in hospitals! Imi is still swadlled as she wakes her self up with her startle reflex if she's not!

Oh, that's soooooo silly! Our LO is fully swaddled each and every night, and half swaddled (arms out) for his naps. The only way they would overheat is if you were in a really hot climate, in which case, of course you wouldn't swaddle. Swaddling is common all around the world, and nearly everyone I know does it. Go for it!
