what age to be read stories?

Hi everyone
I was just wondering at what age you started reading stories to your LOs? The reason I ask is I have a gorgeous set of Mr Men books for Ethan when he is bigger - hubby thinks we should give them to him at Xmas and we can read them to him, but I think he will be too young (6 months). I would be inclined to keep them till his 1st birthday in May or even until next Christmas. What age do you think he would he be able to understand simple stories being read to him?

Thanks

We read to Rebecca as part of her bed routine from about 8 months. Sheis now 18 months and loves a story before settling to sleep. Only problem now is she prefers daddy to read them and not rofl

All ages! We've been reading to Byron since before he was born. He loves books.

We started at about 4-5 months. I'd go for books with bright pictures though - Dinosaurs Love Underpants was an early favourite for Kaya

Thanks ladies - so maybe it will be OK for Christmas then?! Yay! He's got other books like picture books, texture books, peekaboo books and the little cardboard ones I was just wondering about the story ones.

Thanks!

Ive read to Roman since he was 3 months. He looks at the colours in the books and likes to grab for it. That pushed me really into getting the books with textures in it.

Sometimes he falls asleep when im reading. I thought best to start young and hopefully we can introduce it into his bedtime routine.

It's never to early to start reading to a baby...we started before Evie was born and have been reading to her regularly since then. Although they can't understand the meaning of the words at this stage it is very good for their language development if they hear the rhythm of language from a young age through chatting, reading aloud and singing. Also, research shows that children who hear a larger range of words at a young age often develop a larger vocabulary quicker. On a practical note, your LO will probably want to grab and touch the books you are reading so it is easier if the books are soft, padded or chunky as they are less likely to get ripped and less likely to cause paper cuts.

Lx

We started at a few weeks old. They used to send her to sleep but now she loves looking at the pictures, she'll grab and try to turn the pages and she loves watching me read then looking back at the page? lol

She can't understand whats going on but she knows it's something 'different' than just talking to her because of the tone/pace of my voice etc.
