You can give him baby saline solution, or use a humidifier or some say bring him into a steamy bathroom after a hot shower. I use the humidifier right now as my LO has a cold too.
i was told to use a baby vapour rub , BUT.... most are made for babies from 3 months + so before then to put some on a tissue / muslin and leave it in the cot but out of babys reach for the vapours to circulate.... although i got fed up with putting it on tissue and just dabbed it on the shoulder of his grow
You could also use a nasal aspiratoe designed for babys. I think you can get them quite cheap and my neighbour recommended them highly. Ive not used them so cant give you any practical advice but heres a link with some info to have a nose at (geddit? - sad lol :P)
For snotties I use a bit of wet cotton wool, wrung out and twisted and I sniff down and get her to copy and then I try and twist them out lightly - I don't go poking but I can manage to get some out or at least put a hole in some so she can breathe. She's just started getting upset about havng snotties!
A warm bath seems to really help loosen up Darwin's nose, especially if I take some water and rub it under his nose so it gets just inside (without going uncomfortably up of course). Usually by the end of his bath he's got a gooey bit coming out of his nose even if it seemed totally clear when I put him into the tub!
Hope your LO feels better soon, being blocked up is awful and it must be doubly so for babies who are a) lying down a lot and b) can't understand what's happening
