oops. Little problem!!

I have just put my stairgates up and assumed that the cat would be able to squeeze thorugh the gaps. She can't

The problem is that she is very old and has arthritis, so she can't jump over them. And if I leave them open for her, I may as well not have them!! She doesn't meow when she wants something, she just sits and waits. But she is also a very timid and scared cat and the upstairs is her escape whenever something scares her.

What have other people done about their pets?

hmm that's a tough one, our cats are relatively young and can jump the gates. I guess there's nothing you can put next to it to assist her over? Although that would probably not be helpful as LO could probably climb it too.

Can you cut one bar out so that there's a bigger space that she can fit through but it will still be to small for LO?

Ooh, hadn't thought of that. I'll get OH to look at it tonight and see what he thinks. It's not a massive deal, as my sister gave them to me after having sat in the garage for 3 years!!! I was going to spray paint them anyway, so I suppose I could do this at the same time. And if it doesn't work out, I haven't lost anything!!!

Aww bless. How old is your cat? My cat is 21 and sounds exactly like yours in that there is no way she can jump/climb over anything and also will just sit and wait for someone to help her through. She is tiny though so she might be able to squeeze through the bars. I'll have to measure her face before we go gate-shopping!!!

I was thinking the same thing re stair gates the other day...although we're a few months off putting them in yet. I'll keep an eye on this thread to see if there are any other bright ideas...

I thought she'd be able to squeeze through too, but she just stands there! She has now boycoted this and is sleeping next to me on the couch. Maybe when she's a bit more used to them, she may feel like tackling them. I only put them up this afternoon!!!
