5 week old has snotty nose, please help a worried mummy

Hi, my 5 week old baby has a snotty nose and obviously is having a bit of trouble breathing ( making wheezing noises). He is getting really frustrated and crying all night, and wont sleep.

What can I do to help him?

Also I am worried that he may stop breathing as a result.

Please help

Chloe had this problem at the beginning of the week so we used snuffle babe vapour rub but its only for 3 months plus unless you speak to the doc, HV or pharmacist. Although i doubt it would do much harm if it was put on some tissue near your LOs cloth.

We went the doctor with Chloe and they gave us some saline nasal drops which really help with her nose. You can buy these over the counter but im not sure if theres an age thing on them.

We used the Saline nasal drops when Chlo was a baby and had a blocked nose they suited her we also put some vicks vapour rub on a muslin and tied to the end of her moses basket as she was too young to use anything else on.
Hope this helps x

Another vote for the saline nasal drops. We were also advised to put a couple of drops of baby olbas oil in a bowl of water and place it in the room with the cot. Oh also we propped the pillow end of the cot up slightly so baby was on a slight recline so could breath better. x

You can also use cooled boiled water mixed with bit of salt, if you can't get to the chemist, our dorctor adviced this is ok too . Try not to worry, our baby had a cold at 3 weeks old and I was beside myself, but babies are resiliant things and will be fine

Oliver had a cold a 4 1/2 weeks, we used saline nasal drops, propped up the end of his carry cot, put vapour rub on a bib and attatched it to the hood. Also oil similar to Olbas oil in boiling water worked. We have just brought a humidifier and its working great as he tends to still get a blocked nose at night. I hope your baby feels better soon, take care xx

Saline drops are good, you can get them over the counter in tesco pharmacy. I used to put a hot shower on in the bathroom too, close the door and sit in there with seren for a bit before bedtime and a couple of times a day, the moisture helps clear the nose a bit x

Harriet had this a just under a week old, i took her to the Dr's who said it was a cold, and i got prescribed some nose drops to give her before each feed. it was just salt water and it helped to break down the snot lol
since then she got another cold about a month old and i used the drops straight away..it soon cleared up

i also propped her up at night to help her breath. or just put her in her pram slightly upright (i have a prammette that turns into a buggy ) .

hope that helps x
