She might need surgery

well last week i took gabrielle to the doctor because her eye was never completly clearing up so he prescribed eye drops and said if it dosnt clear within three days bring her back so after 3 days still no change so i brought her back today he gave her ointment but said she has a blocked tear duct that so she has to go and see a specialist about it the doctor said the most likley procedure is unblocking it with a prob and putting her under an anastetic, so now i'm just praying theres another option shes only 4 months old surgery is freaking me out im worried now

Halas i don't know where you live but in the uk the policy in most ophthalmology depts is to leave a blocked duct until baby is a year old before doing anything surgical, this is because the majority resolve spontaneously and its better to leave a little one with a sticky eye that isn't causing any real problems than operating which involves a general anaesthetic. Also, at the end of the day its your decision so if you'd rather wait its up to you but to the best of my knowledge a blocked duct doesn't lead to anything sinister if you leave it untreated it just looks a bit unsightly cause of the gunk. x

Hi, my little girl used to have a really bad eye whenever she woke it was completely gunked up and also gunk would just gather during the course of the day, I was forever wiping it. She too had drops which didn't work. I never got back to the doctor tho. However, just this last week or so her eye is completely better. The problem has just disappeared. I've done nothing different, I just noticed that one morning it wasn't gunked up and now never is. It kinda got better overnight! She's 7 months old now and she'd had the sticky eye from birth.

So please don't worry just yet... hope it sorts itself out soon. x

Exactly what I was going to say!! Don't worry just yet hun - you'll probably find it clears up all of a sudden over the next few months x x

Ruby had the exact same thing. Infact when she had the 1st lot of drops it got worse rather than better. we went back 2 or 3 times and the last time were given some ointment and told the same as you. But out of nowhere it cleared up we got up one morning and it wasn't until after she had had her morning feed that i thought 'shit i haven't done her eye' and it was obviously because I hadn't been greeted by the unsightly green gunk it hadn't reminded me to do it. Good Luck for it clearing on it's own and as the others say if you aren't happy then you dn't have to go ahead with any treatment xx

have you tried holding a warm wet wash cloth over her eye. sometimes the warm moisture can help clear blockage.
