He won't stop crying....

Joshua is nearly 3 weeks old. He's an absolute star - except he won't sleep! He was up at 2am this morning for a feed and he's been awake since then!! For the last week or so it takes at least 2.5 hours to settle him after he's fed. We wind him sometimes for an hour and it still doesn't help. It's beginning to get very tiring as I too have been up since 2am!
Now I'm assuming he's 'over-tired' if there is such a thing. He's cried non stop since 4pm. He will sleep for about 10 mins then wake up screaming. I don't want to make a rod for my back by keep picking him up (I left him for over 30mins earlier) but as soon as I pick him up, he stops crying an falls asleep!!! I lay him down and within 5 mins he's awake and crying again! I can't leave him crying for too long as he gets in such a state!!!!
I don't know what to do for the best???
(PS he's fed, clean nappy, etc)
Any advice would be much appriciated!!!!!!

He might just want some cuddles - I know it sounds silly, but Harry was similar. As he's only little, you can't "spoil" him, so don't worry about giving him lots of cuddles now incase he gets too used to it (if you know what I mean). He's been in your tummy for so long, and now he's outside and it takes some getting used to!

Harry used to like lying on his tummy across our knee too - don't know why - think it put a bit of pressure on his tummy and helped him with wind. We'd put him over our knee so his tummy was on one of our thighs and his head was supported on the other thigh and would gently pat and rub his back - he used to do lots of burps and would often fall asleep.

Also - just trying to remember back to when Harry was that age - he started noticing more around him when he was about 3 weeks old, and got quite bored! I remember someone saying that he could be bored and I thought it was ridiculous, but I bought a play mat and he loved it!

It does get easier - it's tough at the beginning. Just give him lots of cuddles. I remember hubby and I did "shifts" to give each other a break! Hubby would go upstairs and look after Harry for an hour whilst I was downstairs in the living room with the door shut... then i'd go up and take over and hubby would go downstairs. Just lets you relax for a while.

Do you swaddle? Might help him settle after his night feeds.

sounds a bit like trapped wind still to me, we have had it quite a lot with zach around 2-3 weeks old and even though he brought up some wind he would hold on to the rest. would fall asleep on us and then wake as soon as we led him down.

I agree with caggie and maybe try lying him on his tummy on your knee. usually does the trick and brings up those tricky bits of wind

Yeah does sound like colic, my little girl had this and it gets worse in the evenings, she would cry for hours. You could try infacol but that takes time to work but we found Dentinox worked for us a treat, she was a changed girl straight away

Does he sleep if you hold him? Byron could hardly ever be put down when he was that little. We spent a lot of time together watching films while he slept in my arms.

I'd just cuddle him. He's only little and you don't get those long cuddles for long! I got a sling too, so I could do stuff and cuddle him I didn't create any rods, he's more than happy to sleep on his own now. Better than some other babies of a similar age I know. I just gave him whatever he wanted when he was little so he felt loved and secure.
