Horrible diaper changes

My son is 14 months old and he absolutely throws a fit when he gets his diaper changed. He twists and turns and screams 75% of the time during a diaper change. Sometimes he gets so worked up that he will cry a good 1/2 hour before calming down. I try singing songs and playing games during diaper changes but nothing really seems to help. The only times he doesn't scream is when he is tired. Anyone else have a baby that does this? Any tips?

Have you tried changing him while he's standing up? I've seen this work with LOs who are walking - I think they feel more in control being on their own two feet than on their backs. Granted it's probably not the easiest way for parents, but if it avoids a temper tantrum it might be worth the awkwardness!

I think I will have to give that a try, don't know how it would work for poop diapers though, I can see him running away then sitting on the floor with poop on him bum

i found that distraction is the key, as im laying him down i would give him something he wasnt normally aloud (lol) like the x-box controller or the working tv remote, etc.. or else after taking his trousers off i drape them over his face and say "where's Brody gone ?" then "oh there he is!" when he pulls them off then he spends the whole nappy change putting them over his face an pulling them off again, while i act shocked every time he appears, lol.
but just recently when i say shall we change your bum? he either goes and gets nappies out or lays down on the floor, bless him. although i still have to entertain him to keep him still long enough.

i tried the pampers easy ups and thought they were great........... unless..........they are allowed to get very wet ie: overnight, they leaked every night i used them , so have ditched them now. ( if it makes sense, i think it may be because being a boy he wee's in the front of the nappy instead of underneath, and coupled with the fact he sleeps on his front with his knees under him and bum in the air all the liquid collected at the very front and the front of the nappy ended up so swollen that gaps appeared around the legs.
bit long winded i know but anyway, we went straight back to active fit.
so yeah distraction or let him have a break mid change for 5 mins then whip him back over to you and try to put the new one on before he has too much time to get worked up. i think its just a phase they go through

Brenn pitches a fit as well, but once the diaper is on he is good to go. I would try to do the standing up change, or hand him stuff.
