Well they say you can start cutting their nails at 6 weeks here. If his nails aren't too long or he's not scratching his face you could stop, Elyse never wore hers unless it was cold and only scratched herself (it was really small too) one time.

i cut his nails at 3 weeks in the hope that he didn't have to wear them again (elijah is the same, Aidan's Mummy, he manages to slip them off too often) but he scratched himself (only a tiny scratch but it was so near his eye!) and so i put them back on him again.

i've cut his nails again today (5 weeks) and put his mitts back on again. maybe i should try with them off for now and see?

Edward has never worn them. No-one told us that we had to wait to cut nails so we've always kept them short by either cutting or filing them.

I didn't know you were supposed to wait to cut their nails either? But it didn't matter how short they were or filed they always scratched themselves, the boys wore them for a long time lol. I'd say atleast a month pretty much all the time and alot of time for another 1-2mo lol. I didn't want them to have scratches all over their pretty faces haha or hurt themselves of course

I cut Amelies nails a few days after birth oops.

Anyway I never really bothered with scratch mitts. She managed to get them off in the night anyway.

Never really bothered with the scratch mitts as they were always too big and fell off her tiny hands. What we did do was put her in sleepsuits with the sleeves that fold over the hands, if you know what i mean? They were great. From Mothercare. xxx

I don't think I used scratch-mitts much after the first few days in the hospital. I wasn't told you had to wait to cut nails either, although I don't remember Ryan's being particularly long. I just bit them to cut them - sounds horrible, but was advised by my HV and my mum to do it, as there's no chance of hurting their fingers as there is with clippers/scissors and the nails are very soft.
