I smoked for YEARS! Quit about 5 years ago but still missed it...then started smoking socially...did that for a couple of years and then poof....2 years ago I was DONE. I tried having a smoke when I was drinking and I felt like I was going to puke, it was like my body was just DONE! And now I don't miss it at all...I forget sometimes that I was a smoker...lol. So it can happen...

umm... I hope you do realize since you bf, that niahm is getting the chemicals through you... whatever you ingest, she ingests, bfing does not cancel out bad chemicals.... and a smoker who is bfing increases the risk of SIDS
So you are saying that BF & smoking are harmful to baby?
why wouldn't it be if you were doing it at the same time?!?

It would be just like eating I would assume, baby gets what you eat. And good point ryder, I have never BF so didn't think about that!

Oh goodness yes.

I don't even eat spicy food or drink when BFing, so there is no way in hell I'd smoke and BF. It's been proven that it actually changes the taste of your BM, so even if its not causing any harm I still wouldn't want my LO to taste nicotine through BM. What an awful thought.

also found this:

"Nicotine ingested by smoking tobacco can get into breast milk. Heavy smoking (more than a pack a day) has been known to decrease milk production and to cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heart rate, and restlessness in babies. In general, though, nicotine is not easily absorbed into a baby's intestinal tract and is quickly metabolized."

After reading the link where I got that quote, who the fuck would smoke a pack a day and BF?!?!

I've had 3 cigs in the last 6 days and I'm in turmoil over it and not BFing this week. I've only been having them after Niamh is asleep too, so I'm not touching her. (Will need to update you all, but she's in her own room now!)

Hopefully I'll stop after OHs and mine's counselling on Tuesday

I smoked for 10 years, and quit with the help of The Patch.

Why anyone would go back to smoking is beyond me. You totally did yourself a favour by quitting! You don't actually need a smoke when you're drinking, you just think you do. Don't restart! Your LO's deserve all the time in the world with you, and smoking is going to chip away at that!

Gosh girls a mums job is hard enough without being told the facts about smoking.... come on... Im not stupid..!! I dont smoke in my house, or in my car and its only been more recently since she has been older that I even go anywhere near her after a cigarette. Hv was only concerned about this when she was newborn... ! Im 23 and still got plenty of time to quit and really dont think 5 a day will have a major effect on me! My nan is 72 and smoking 20 plus a day and has done for YEARS and is still fine....!! On the other side though OHs nan died from lung cancer through smoking... so I have seen it happen!!
And FACT obesity costs the NHS more money than smoking!!!
I will stop smoking but I cannot say I will never smoke again..... especially when I have a drink... and Tyff I know I dont Need too.... but I want too!! I enjoy it!!

kerry i was thinking exactly that but didnt wanna say anything! this thread was supposed to be a conversation for smokes Ex smokers whatever we all know the risks of smoking but i dont think anyone needs a lecture!! untill you've been a smoker your self you'll never know how hard it is to give up and RAFwife dont feel like you need to justify your self to anyone you do a brilliant job with naimh, your going through alot dont let anyone let you feel bad for having the odd fag! im not saying its right but i have aunties who have 5 kids each and they smoked with every single one all the way though pregnancy and after infact i have an auntie who is breastfeeding at the moment and smokes and her and LO are fine and healthy as i said tho no witch hunt please i wasnt saying its not bad im just saying from what iv seen no harms been done! Also they say smoking while pregnant give you smaller babys? thats a load of rubbish my auntie had a baby at 11lb 3oz!
