I am really starting to freak out. It looks like my DH and I (and other family members) are going to have to evacuate this weekend. I know some people think we are stupid for living in New Orleans after losing almost everything in Katrina, but we started over and have been doing good. I really don't feel like starting over again. :hissy:

Thanks ladies. It is just really upsetting b/c today is the 3 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and here we are talking about evacuation again! The city that I live in is actually a suburb of New Orleans called Harahan, and we did not get any flooding for Katrina, and very minimal damage as a whole.... The problem we had was that at the time, we were renting a townhouse, and our roof caved in, so almost everything got ruined, but my parents lived the next street over, and they had no damage at all, so we moved in with them for about 6 months. We were able to bounce back from that, saved up money to buy our own home, and just got finished fixing it up.
The latest forecast has the eye of the hurricane making landfall to the left of us, but that can change b/c we are still a few days away... Even if it does go to the left, the right side of the hurricane is the worst when it comes to wind and rain.
We are planning on going to my aunts house, who lives about an hour north of us. If it looks like is going to be too bad, we are heading to another relatives house in Dallas, TX... I HOPE we don't have to go that far!!

What the hell am I going to do without my BnB "fix"?? It will be bad enough dealing with the hurricane bullshit, but to not be able to come on here is going to be torture...Hopefully my aunt will still have internet access and I can update you guys.
OR better yet, the stupid hurricane can keep going West and hit Texas... not that I would wish it on anybody, but..............

Okay ladies, I am going to be packing most of the afternoon today and may not be online again if we end up leaving tonight to go to my aunt's house.IF we don't leave tonight, we will probably end up leaving tomorrow morning. Either way, traffic is going to be killer (will probably take us at least 4 hours instead of the normal 1!!) I know my aunt has internet access, but I don't want to take over her computer (unless she is cool with it)
HOPEFULLY I will be back online in a couple of days telling you about how we evacuated for nothing!!!
oh if anyone wants to keep an eye on whats going on locally here, a good local news website is www.wwltv.com
I will miss everyone

We are still just hanging out....waiting...eating all kinds of junk food. All the windows are boarded up here, and we should start getting some heavy winds and rain tonight. The latest track has it going a little more to the West (which would be a wonderful thing!!) so hopefully it keeps going West, but it is too soon to really know where exactly it is going to make landfall.
Several of my neighbors were planning on staying b/c our area did so well during hurricane Katrina, so I am praying that they are okay.

Bloody hell hun, scary stuff. I've been watching this on the tv and seeing those roads out of New Orleans just full of cars leaving. One of the UK news people was stood in the French Quarter at about 7am UK time (I think thats about 1am your time) and it was a ghost town, apart from the National Guard.
Apparantly it should be hitting in about 7 hours, so I'll keep praying for you and your friends and family hun.:hugs:

I really hope everything is okay. This just seems like a huge string of never-ending hurricanes with more developing. We sometimes get the tail end of them if they're going in the right direction, and that is bad enough. Hope all you in the States are safe and doing okay, wherever these stupid things decide to hit :hugs:

I'm guessing in these circumstances people are glad to still have a roof? x
chefamy1122
Sep 10th, 2008, 01:13 AM
Well, the city that she lives in is a pretty remote (aka "middle of nowhere - LOTS of trees!) so it was not really a top priority for Entergy... but they are supposed to have it on by the end of this week. They have a generator hooked up to their fridge, freezer, TV and some fans, but the amount of money they are spending on keeping that thing running adds up quick!

and yes, people here are counting their blessings that they still have a roof! This could have been another Hurricane Katrina, and the city was just really starting to bounce back from the first one.
I don't think mentally I could have handled losing everything again....at least not yet..... I know people probably think I am crazy for staying here being such a high risk for hurricanes, but this is HOME and I really cannot picture living anywhere else.

I'm really glad you didn't have any damage to your house this time, it must be so hard losing so much to something that just cannot be controlled. I hope your aunt gets her power back soon.
Also, i hope you don't mind me asking but i know that over here a lot of insurance firms won't pay out for "acts of god" so things including weather etc. When Katrina hit, or any other hurricane were people able to claim on insurance or not? God, i feel so ignorant for not already knowing the answer to that!

Insurance when it comes to hurricanes is a JOKE!! At the time, my DH and I were renting and did not have renters insurance (yes that was our own stupidity) so we ended up having to take out a loan. I know of some people who owned their homes and lost everything, and got completely screwed by their insurance company. I also know someone who barely lost anything in Katrina, and got enough insurance money to pay for completely remodeling their house (which it did not need) and had money left over to go on a cruise, PLUS put money in the bank!!
The thing is, a lot of people here do not know you need to take out a seperate flood insurance policy, so there were many people whose homes flooded that thought they were going to be covered, only to find out they were not.
