thought it would be nice if i put up some stuff im learning at birthing class that might be useful for all. its only 5 classes so after each one ill just write up stuff that seems interesting. I take no responsibility with the medical accuracy of the things said here.
so here goes, at my first class the teacher asking people to write their feelings about the birth in a couple of words on the page. negative ones and positive ones. negative words included: pain, fear, never ending, cant manage, tear, cant help my wife, umbilical cord complications, blood, others expectations, want my mom.. positive ones were: baby, miracle, happy, family
She showed us pictures of the different stages of labor. After this she talked about some of the negative feelings. She said no one can say that labor doesnt hurt ( pain, fear) it does but being informed about what will happen to you ie getting the fear down and accepting the pain will make the labor much easier on you. If you are afraid and tense and approach each contraction this way things will be a lot tougher on you and your muscles will be at war with you. So try and approach the contractions like each one is a good kind of pain that is helping you progress and get to where you need to be. i liked this idea i think its rubbish when people say o, if you breath right you wont feel anything come on.. what the teacher is saying makes more sense : do your best to relax and it will make it easier on you and accept that you will feel pain. She spoke about the fact that we will talk about what husbands can do later on. As far as blood goes she said there is really not a lot of blood at a labor. The baby is born covered in a creamy white substance , if you go early there will be a lot of it, if you go later there will be very little of it. you dont HAVE to clean it off the babies skin as it gets absorbed in about half and hour and its a good moisturizer, but you can if you want to. As far as umbilical cord complications she said 20 -40% of babies are born with the cord around their neck and its totally fine they just unwrap it when they see it, she even saw a baby born with it wrapped 3 times around the neck in that case the doctor cut it away.
When the baby is born it will not necessarily be pink or beige or what ever your natural skin color is ( there were only Caucasian people there so im sorry i dont know what colors would be normal for darker skinned babies). In this case she said a baby coming out purple, blue or red is fine and dont freak out within a few min the baby will get the right color. Also dont freak out if it has a cone head, that straightens up quickly too. The baby has 4 min of reserve oxygen before any brain damage could set in so dont freak out if the baby doesnt cry straight away. they dont hit babies anymore to make them cry ( at least here in Israel) so she said they either tap its heels or rub its back vigorously.
We then talked about the cord. There are two different opinions one that you should not cut it straight away but only after its stops pulsating and one says that it does not really matter. This got us on the subject of cord blood. Obviously if you are looking to bank cord blood then u cut straight away so keep this in mind as some people say that blood should go to the baby. The teacher didnt give her opinion either way. She told us this story about some group called lotus i think that believe in not cutting the cord til it falls off naturally. they believe it will help the evils of society.. um think whatever u want about that one?!
We spoke a bit about nutrition and the importance of protein. not too many carbs and calcium, apparently milk is not the best source of calcium for human beings. We spoke about eating tuna once a week, in the third tri a glass of wine once a week is considered ok, one cup of coffee or tea a day. try avoid coke all together its destroys nutrients in your food even diet coke. She said try avoid grapes and watermelon they make very big babies! i can understand that as they are loaded with sugar.
We talked about the placenta and that it will come out after the baby. She said that they will check its whole, if not it needs to be surgically removed which is very rare..
okay i cant think about any more interesting bits now..
hope you enjoyed this whoever read it..
